Orangeries - A Room for All Seasons

Orangeries date back to Renaissance Italy. Italian nobility would use glass rooms to grow citrus trees, which is where the term orangery originates. They became popular with architectures and nobility in Britain in the 17th Century as they made it possible to grow tropical and citrus fruits in the cooler British climate. Often regarded as a status symbol, these beautiful and elegant buildings feature a unique lantern-style roof which allows sunlight to stream in to your home.

An elegant extension

Orangeries are now seen as an extension to the home rather than a separate space but even modern orangeries maintain the same traditional elegance they have always offered.

An orangery is built with solid brick pillars which support the roof. Usually built with materials that match your existing property, an orangery looks part of the building rather than just a usual extension. Large windows and a glass ceiling allow light to flood in whilst still offering privacy and security due to the half brick construction. This construction also allows the space to be more versatile meaning it can be used as a kitchen or dining space as well as additional living space. An orangery is seen as a more permanent and robust option compared with a conservatory.

The roof of an orangery is a large plastered flat roof with a glass lantern placed on a raised platform centrally built in to the roof structure to allow maximum light to enter the room.

A timeless style

As well as offering timeless elegance and additional living space an orangery will also add value to your home. There is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to design and your new orangery can be customised to fit your needs.

A traditional orangery will feature french style doors made from glass which open out in to your garden making it the perfect room for relaxation in the summer months whilst remaining cosy and inviting sanctuary during the winter.

Another option is to choose bi-fold door options meaning you can eliminate the boundaries between your indoor and outdoor space and appreciate your garden all year round. The option of bi-fold doors also creates the perfect alfresco entertaining environment. Find out more about our bi-fold door options here: https://www.leekeswindows.co.uk/doors//bi-fold-doors
